A common question we get is "how do I increase my work time with mediums?"
This is usually because of the often-cited limitation of working with acrylics; they dry and harden quickly. While a quick dry time can be useful in some instances, slowing down and opening your work time is invaluable. You may be asking; What is the difference between work time and dry time?
Well, for starters, work time is the period the paint can be used while dry time is just ‘how long until it is touch dry’. For example, if you’re blending two colors together for a custom color on your palette, and the outside of your first paint color begins to dry (creating a firm plastic film) it is becoming ‘unworkable’ as the dried parts of the paint can interfere with your mixing results.
Another example is if you put a color down on a canvas that you want to create a seamless color transition, but it’s already begun to dry before the blend can happen. This can make that blending process feel rushed and sloppy.
With this in mind, let’s explore some options in Nova Color’s mediums to help with that exact issue!
-
Acrylic Retarder (299)
One of the key ways to extend your working time with acrylic paints is by using an acrylic retarder. This medium slows down the drying process of your paint, allowing you to work with it for longer periods. Simply mix a small amount of the retarder with your acrylics. It’s particularly useful for blending and creating smooth transitions in your paintings. Just be mindful not to overuse it, as too much can affect the paint's adhesion and durability. -
Slow Dry Matte Liquid (217)
For those who prefer a matte finish but still need extra time, the Slow Dry Matte Liquid is your go-to. This medium not only extends the drying time but also maintains a matte finish, which is great for reducing shine and glare. Mix it into your acrylics for a smoother working process and extended open time. - Novaplex (235): Another way to extend your working time is by using a flow enhancer like the Novaplex #235. This clear, glossy fluid is perfect when you need to increase fluidity without the loss of adhesion. Mix it into your acrylics, and you’ll find that your paint remains fluid and workable for a much longer period. It’s especially handy if you’re planning to do some intricate detailing or if you’re working with an airbrush. While its main purpose isn’t to extend work time, it is still a good multifuctional option if you have it on hand.

4. Novaplex (233)
When it comes to mixing and creating custom pigments, Novaplex is indispensable. This creamy fluid medium is ideal for making your own pigments or thinning your acrylic paints. It’s particularly useful if you’re working on fabric painting or need to adjust the consistency of your paints. Just remember to apply it in thin layers to avoid any issues with cracking. While it does extend your work time a bit, it is advised as a secondary option for work time instead of the first two mediums listed.
Using these mediums effectively will not only extend your working time but also enhance your artistic results. Dive into experimenting with these products and see how they can elevate your acrylic painting experience.
